What is a wolfdog?

 A wolf dog is any canine with both domestic dog and wolf in its recent genetic ancestry and can result from any of the following parent combinations: a pure wolf and a pure domestic dog, a pure wolf and a wolf dog, two wolf dogs, or a wolf dog and a pure dog. There or difference in each wolfdog according to it's content and differences between wolfdogs and wolf hybrids. If you are purchasing a wolfdog puppy from a breeder then that breeder will be able to tell what content your puppy will have and whether its a wolfdog or a wolf hybrid. A good breeder will have DNA or the dam and sire and possible the puppy itself. Some wolfdogs will need to be placed in homes that have had previous experience in owning wolfdogs while low content wolfdogs can be placed with first time owners. Wolfdogs no matter the content will have wolf DNA so knowing as much as possible about wolfdogs and hybrids will make the decision to get one alot easier. Can anyone own a wolfdog?

What kind of containment is required to own a wolfdog?

When you get a wolfdog you need to understand that they are not going to stay a cute little puppy. They are going to grow into a much larger and very smart wolfdog. They are curious and creative in their abilities to find ways to escape if the neighbors dog is in heat or if they see a rabbit go across the the yard and they want to track it down and play with it so having them in a secured safe containment are is very important. What do wolfdogs eat?

The diet of a wolfdog is somewhat dependent on the content of the wolfdog but as a general rule wolfdogs need to maintain a diet that would be like what a wild wolf would have. Things like raw meat, organs and bones would be a highly recommend diet but a supplement of high quality kibble with a minimum of 25% protein and made with meat being the first ingredient. Can you own a wolfdog around children?

Yes you can. But first there are things to consider when you bring a wolfdog Puppy home with kids and its more about how to train and prepare the kids first. Puppies raised around a entire family that has been educated about how to act around a wolfdog. Small things like not letting the high energy of the children to influence the behavior of the wolfdog. Wolfdogs feed off how its pack is reacting. If a child is running around screaming then it can cause the wolfdog to either feel frightened and nervous or the wolfdog will want to join in with running around and jumping and mouthing which can accidently cause harm to small children. How to I purchase a wolfdog?

The first step is finding a good breeder. At Mille's Wolfhaven we do a 3 step interview process to establish a buyers ability to handle a wolfdog and their knowledge of the breed. How do you socialize a wolfdog?

There are alot of things that go into properly socializing a wolfdog. As a puppy it needs to constantly exposed to everyday things and places. What is the whelping process for wolfdogs?

Every breeder has their own way of whelping wolfdog puppies according to the content and needs of the dam. At Miller's Wolfhaven everyone of our wolfdogs are family and we treat them as such when it comes to the birthing and whelping of each litter. None of our litters are birth outside. We have two roms as part of hour home that are designated as whelping room. These rooms are heated and wolfdog proof. We monitor our dams during the whole birthing process with hands on as much as the dam will allow. we have specialty designed whelping boxes and heating pads to ensure the safety or the newborn pups. Do you have to sign a contract to purchase a wolfdog?

Yes. A great breeder will want to ensure that the integrity of the breed is in good hands they will want to ensure that the wolfdog with be properly care for and that is why a contract is in place. The contract should include things like whether or not the buyer has breeding rights and that if anything happens that the buyer can no longer care for the wolfdog the wolfdog will be returned to the breeder no question asked.
